5 networking opportunities for writers

  • July 22nd, 2010 3:56 pm ET

Building a network of fellow creative-types can benefit you in so many ways.

Here are a few ways to find and create a network of like-minded individuals who can truly enrich your creative life.

The new BookTour.Com

BookTour.com is a one-stop shop for books, reading and writing, and the site has had a recent facelift to make it more bright, bold and user-friendly.

Writers:

  • build a book tour by adding tour dates
  • find local venues to host their events
  • search for media contacts, web designers and publicists

Readers:

  • find local events
  • stay informed of when their favorite authors will be doing readings or events in their town

Websites for Writers

Websites for Writers is a directory of online writing resources of all types.

From bloggers to books; copywriting to writing tools and publishing, you can find advice, instruction and inspiration for all aspects of your writing life.

If you would like to offer your own writing-related website for consideration, check out the rules and submit your site.

Amwriters Directory

Social networking is an easy way to find writers in your area and beyond.

Writer Johanna Harness started the #amwriting trend on Twitter, where writers from across the globe can connect and find one another by simply attaching the #amwriting tag to their tweets.

The sister site to the #amwriting movement on twitter is the Amwriters Directory.

Writers can submit their information to be added to the directory, and find their fellow authors while also getting a little exposure for themselves.

Goodreads

Book lovers unite on Goodreads! You can create a free account, add the books you own or are reading, and share reviews of your library.

Goodreads makes it wasy to find others who are reading the same books you are, and conversations about books are a breeze.

By adding friends on Goodreads, you can receive updates when they add new books or post reviews, making the conversation flow more easily.

Meetup.com

Meetup.Com makes it a snap to find locals who share your interests.

From book to writing and networking groups for freelancers, a quick search will yield results that will give you a headstart on building your network.

Most groups are public but a few are private, but only require you to submit a quick application or contact the group owners for an invitation.

Toronto Groups

These are just a few of the writing groups for Toronto-area authors:

The Bottom Line

From having someone to bounce ideas off, to learning new techniques and sharing your writing with others who "get it", networking is easy and can bring a sense of community to the solitary life of any writer.
